Service Stream has been awarded the Burnley Tunnel Low Voltage Cable Replacement Project by Transurban, a major infrastructure upgrade to the tunnel’s electrical backbone that powers its essential lighting, jet fans, pumps, Variable Message Signs (VMS), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and communication systems.

Under the contract, Service Stream will install over 20 tonnes of steel cable support systems and the replacement of 20 kilometres of cabling that services the tunnel equipment rooms via multiple substations.

This collaborative project has been developed under an Early Contractor Involvement model since June 2024, with Service Stream playing a pivotal role in constructability planning, methodology development, and early procurement. Service Stream’s deep engagement during this phase has ensured a robust, unified solution that will be implemented safely and efficiently, through well planned traffic management solutions.

Key works scheduled to begin in May 2025 include:

  • Cable tray and bracket installations
  • Cabling hauling, on site fabrication
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Safe decommissioning of the existing system

Service Stream’s approach draws heavily on learnings from our previous tunnel works, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum safety and reliability.

Service Stream will keep Melbourne moving by minimising full tunnel closures throughout this critical upgrade. One lane of live traffic will remain open during the overnight works over the coming months, safely managing travel through the tunnel during these complex works.

Keep an eye out for the team in the tunnel over the coming months and please drive safely!
