Our work on the Burnley Tunnel Low Voltage Cable Replacement project goes live

Following a comprehensive, week-long onboarding and induction program, Service Stream officially commenced night works on the Burnley Tunnel Low Voltage Cable Replacement Project for Transurban on Sunday, 4th May 2025.
Over the coming months, our team will install more than 20 tonnes of steel cable supports and replace 20km of electrical cabling that powers essential lighting, jet fans, pumps, Variable Message Signs (VMS) and communication systems throughout the tunnel.
In preparation for the complex work ahead, our newly formed project team participated in an intensive onboarding and induction program.
The program covered a range of key topics and sessions, including:
- Service Stream onboarding and inductions
- Transurban inductions
- Tunnel safety protocols
- HSEQ Management System and processes such as SWMS
- Critical Safety Controls including confined space awareness and live traffic management
- Emergency response preparedness including CRP refresher courses
- Environmental and community impact considerations
- Site-specific constructability methodology and sequencing
- Job-specific tool handling and operation retraining
- Elevated Work Platform (EWP) retraining
- External Anchor Bolt training at Swinburne University
The onboarding week also featured collaborative sessions with representatives from Service Stream senior leadership, Transurban and key subcontractors, helping to build alignment across delivery partners ahead of operational commencement.
Service Stream’s ITS Construction Manager, Anthony Burgess said this onboarding program is designed to ensure every team member is fully equipped and updated technically, operationally and culturally to begin work safely and effectively on site.
“It’s incredibly important to ensure the entire project team starts off on the right footing with the correct knowledge and skills to safety deliver this critical upgrade project, alongside key subcontractors, and in collaboration with our client Transurban,” says Anthony.
“It’s also a great opportunity for the teams to get to know each other and form some close bonds ahead of the months of night works we’re now undertaking.”
“We’ve worked hard to design this project to minimise as much disruption to road users as possible and we’re proud to help keep Melbourne moving safely and smoothly.”
Keep an eye out for our crews and remember to drive safe!
